The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) is currently focused on increasing direct flights to Indonesia from three countries that are major markets for Indonesia, namely China, India, and Russia.

“This increase in flights focuses on the main three foreign tourist markets, China, India, and Russia,” said the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, during The Weekly Brief with Sandi Uno, which was held hybrid in Jakarta on Monday, January 30, 2023.

He also added that cooperation with domestic and foreign airlines must be done as a recovery effort.

In addition, at present, the recovery of foreign tourists is still considered quite low. “As of today, the recovery of foreign tourists is still below 40 percent,” said Sandiaga Uno.

Therefore, according to him, the addition of flights must be realized soon as an effort to reach the target of foreign tourists in 2023, namely between 3.4 and 7.4 million tourists. These three countries, according to Sandiaga, are the main target for Indonesia’s tourism market because they have a large potential for tourists.

“According to our data, demand from these three countries is very high to come to Indonesia,” explained Sandiaga.

However, he stated that the main obstacle is still the limited number of direct flights. India and Russia do not yet have direct flights, while China has just started operating charter flights.

“For that reason, we continue to communicate with the Ministry of Transportation and they received direct instructions from the President to provide direct flights from India, China, and Russia. They will cooperate with airlines that already have planes, so flights can be launched directly,” said the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy.

For now, there are only charter flights operating from China to Indonesia. “The first to come were about 200 passengers from China based on charter flights,” he explained.
