Deputy Regent of Klungkung, I Made Kasta, inspect the evacuation process of a stranded whale in Lepang Beach, Takmung Village on Wednesday (5/4).
The Head of the Klungkung Regional Disaster Management Agency, I Putu Widiada, reported that the evacuation of the mammal back to the sea had gone smoothly. The BPBD staff, together with the police, balawista, and the local community worked together to carry out the evacuation.
Furthermore, Putu Widiada explained that the whale that was successfully evacuated was still alive.
“The reason for returning the stranded whale to the ocean is that it was still alive,” said I Putu Widiada.
I Putu Widiada added that the Klungkung Quick Response Team (TRC) is still stationed on the beach to ensure that the marine mammal does not beach itself again.
The Head of the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), I Gede Setiadi Putra, reported that the stranded whale was a Sperm Whale or the Box-Headed Whale (Physeter macrocephalus), and the area on the coast of Klungkung Regency is a migration route for whales.
“The possibility for the whale to be stranded was due to weather factors, exhaustion, or being hit by a big wave,” said I Gede Setiadi Putra.
“I hope the whale can return to its companions and continue its migration,” said Deputy Regent Kasta.
